Call me patient 1. I am writing as a guest blogger for Dr. Ryan Han, Chiropractor and Acupuncturist. Before I begin on the main subject of this blog—full disclosure—I have been a patient of Dr. Han for many years, as well as my children. I have witnessed first hand the power of chiropractic and acupuncture treatments in all of our lives. The main topic I would like to address is how acupuncture treatments have helped me over the years with anxiety and chronic pain.
I have suffered with anxiety all of my life. In fact, anxiety was one of the first emotions I recall experiencing. As an advocate for mental health and working to Cure the Stigma surrounding mental illness—I am very open and forthcoming with my struggles. What does this have to do with Dr. Han? Through the practice of acupuncture, Dr. Han has given me relief from anxiety.
One of the techniques he uses is called ‘ear seeds’. These are very tiny metal balls (called seeds) that are attached to a small square band-aid. These are applied to specific points on my ear, which relate to the meridians that alleviate anxiety. I simply gently squeeze one of the ‘seeds’ on my ear, regulate my breathing, and feel much calmer. I can do this once a day or as many times as I want to—and the ‘seeds’ stay attached for up to a week. Plus, they blend right in with my skin tone, so no one really notices and allows me to control my anxiety without medication.
When I receive an acupuncture treatment, it takes anywhere between 15-30 minutes. Dr. Han will place the needles and then allow my body to re-direct its energy, or Qi, to bring healing to sore muscles and provide deeper relaxation. He will always combine acupuncture with some sort of additional therapy such as ultra sound or manual adjustment in my personal treatment plan. I have recently been seeing him for hip pain (the last 6 months). Chiropractic and acupuncture treatment is not able to cure my hip condition—my joint has deteriorated—but has enabled me to keep walking and relieve serious chronic pain while awaiting surgery.
Over the years, my children have come to Dr. Han with a variety of complaints. My son played football and would suffer from rib pain periodically. Between Dr. Han’s manual adjustments and acupuncture treatments, he was ready to get back in the game. My daughter often has headaches. In fact, she has a disorder called puesdo tumor cerebri and Dr. Hans’s adjustments have helped her headaches, along with regular visits to her optical neurologist and prescribed medication.
My family, as an adjunct to western medicine, utilizes chiropractic care. I have had the opportunity to maintain and improve my health through chiropractic medicine all my life. My grandparents and uncle were chiropractic physicians. So, in a way I was born into it, but have stayed committed to chiropractic care simply due to the fact it works!
